I used to think leaving things unfinished was a character flaw. Like if discipline was a muscle, mine never made it past the warmup.

If you need proof, visit my art room. It’s less of a workspace, more a museum of “almost”. Half-used sketchbooks, canvases stuck mid-thought. Sewing machines that work perfectly but haven’t been touched in months years (more on this eventually). Drafts saved under increasingly desperate file names—final, final_final, okay_this_one_for_real—none of which were in fact, for real.

These are the ghosts in my apartment. Not the scary kind—just the lingering presence of versions of myself that I tried on but didn’t keep. For a long time, I treated this as evidence or proof that I couldn't follow through. Or that I couldn’t be trusted with my own ideas. Starting was my jam, but finishing? That belonged to better, more disciplined people.

Lately I’ve been noticing something different though.

Ive been thinking about how we talk about completion. And how “finish what you start” became the standard we measure ourselves against. How ideas only seem to count once it’s wrapped up and ready to show the world. But what if some things aren’t meant to last forever?

When I first had the idea of starting a Substack back in September, I went back and forth for weeks on whether or not I would actually go through with it. Or if it would become yet another nearly to add to the collection. I pushed the launch date back an entire month before I quit being hard on myself and realized that some ideas are seasonal. They show up, do what they came to do and leave. Some are just passing through—here to stretch you, wake you up and remind you that you’re still capable of wanting things.

Those unused sewing machines? Maybe they weren’t a waste. Perhaps they were proof of curiosity. Of a version of me who could see herself making clothes, learning patterns and working with her hands. That version mattered, even if she only stuck around for a chapter.

Same with the unfinished writing. Some drafts didn’t need endings because they simply weren’t going anywhere. They were processing. Thinking out loud. They were me circling a feeling until I understood it well enough to move on. Maybe that’s not failure. Perhaps that’s just how it works.

I realize how much I want everything to “go somewhere”. To be useful or justify itself. But creativity, I find, doesn’t always want to be efficient. What if sometimes it just wants to rearrange the furniture in your brain and leave before you ask about its five-year-plan?

Not everything needs to be monetized.

Not everything needs to be mastered.

Not everything needs to cross a finish line.

There might be intelligence in stopping. Or recognizing when continuing would turn something you loved into a chore. In choosing not to force an idea into a shape it’s resisting just because you think you should complete it. Maybe some projects exist to teach your hands something new. I’ve been trying to teach myself how to crochet for years and perhaps, one day, it won’t make me feel like my hands don’t belong to me. But if not, maybe it solely exists to show what doesn’t fit—so I can find what does.

I used to look at my unfinished things like broken promises. Now I see them as breadcrumbs. Markers of movement. They’re evidence that I've been paying attention to my own curiosity, even when it didn’t lead anywhere neat or sellable. Completion implies closure. But maybe not everything deserves to be closed. Maybe some things are meant to stay open-ended, a little unresolved, like memories you don’t revisit often but that still shape how you move.

We romanticize the finished masterpiece. But I’m learning to appreciate the half-formed ideas that quietly changed me. The sketches that taught my hand something. The home project that failed but rerouted me entirely. The abandoned path that clarified where I was never supposed to go. Maybe leaving things unfinished isn’t about quitting. Maybe it's about listening. For when the energy shifts and when the season ends. Or listening for when holding on would cost more than letting go.

I’m learning to stop treating unfinished projects like evidence against me and start seeing them as a record of becoming. Proof that I tried, that I explored and that I trusted myself enough to change my mind.

The ghosts in my apartment aren’t haunting me. They’re just keeping me company. Reminders of all the versions of myself I’ve been, all the curiosities I’ve followed and all the paths I've walked down just to see where they led.

And maybe that’s the real completion—not a finished product, but the fact that I didn’t abandon myself along the way. Some things are meant to be completed. And some are meant to be left unfinished, gently, because they’ve already done exactly what they came to do.

Indulgence gets treated like a moral failing. Like enjoying things a little too much means you missed some invisible character building memo. Like pleasure is something you’re supposed to grow out of once you learn to be productive, restrained and socially acceptable at brunch.

But there’s a difference between indulgence that satisfies and indulgence that just fills space.

Surface-level indulgence is reactionary. It’s buying the thing because of the logo, not because you love wearing it. Chasing the trendy reservation because it’s hard to get, not because the food moves you. Collecting experiences for the story you’ll tell instead of how they actually felt. From the outside, it looks like satisfaction but it doesn’t really land. You’re going through the motions but not actually feeling it. It’s giving performative as fuck. And I give that zero stars.

Indulgence rooted in self-knowledge is different. It’s slower. More deliberate. It’s spending on linen sheets because you know you sleep better in them, ordering the same dish for the third time because it genuinely satisfies you, buying fresh flowers weekly not for guests but because you learned they shift your mood. You stop chasing and start selecting. And since it’s grounded in clarity about what actually satisfies you, there’s no guilt, no second-guessing and no performance. You know why you want it. And that knowing makes the experience richer. It’s cheaper than therapy, honestly.

This week’s board sits in that second category—lips caught between gold grills, florals oozing abundance, silhouettes that celebrate form without apology, shells polished to a sheen you want to touch, spaces that command attention sans permission. It’s the kind of luxury that comes from knowing what you want. It’s decadence that doesn’t perform.

So how do you get there? You pay attention. You notice what you’re drawn to without explaining it away. The colors you linger on? The textures you want to touch? The things that feel like too much—and therefore suspiciously honest? That’s your taste telling on you, and that’s useful information.

When you stop moralizing desire, it becomes data. You start noticing patterns. What you return to vs what looks good in theory but feels wrong up close. What you love in small doses vs what you’d drown in. This is how you learn what actually satisfies you, not just what’s supposed to.

And indulgence teaches you boundaries too. You figure out where pleasure tips into noise, where polish starts to feel hollow, and where “more” stops being better. Discernment doesn’t come from pretending you don’t want “the things”—it comes from finding out which things are actually worth wanting.

So here’s what I’m taking into the week: the question of whether I’m indulging because I know what satisfies me, or because I’m just consuming to fill space. Whether I’m being deliberate, or just going through the motions.

We all do it: come across a photo online—a funny meme, a breath-taking beach view that begs you to relax, a color palette that may feel inspiring in the moment. We instinctively take these digital snapshots and without much thought, save them to folders on our devices named “2026 Vision” or “Inspiration” for later use. The problem is later never comes. We continuously add and collect content as a “just in case”, without asking ourselves the motives behind our actions.

The internet made it easy to collect everything. It didn’t teach us what to do with any of it.

The Myth of the “Inspiration” Folder

It is so easy to come up with practical reasonings behind the action. The “I might need it laters” and “this could be useful…possibly…maybe…someday”, sound pretty plausible on the surface. Convincing ourselves that what we’re accumulating is “good reference material”, or that it’s for a future project becomes enticing after just a few times. And if “inspiration” were really the goal, why does it feel more like the local CubeSmart? Because we’re storing, not using. Maximum intake, zero output. A symbol of creative preparedness that does nothing more than create meaningless clutter.

The Gap Between Intention and Behavior

This made me wonder, why is saving so much easier than engaging? And if everything is important, does anything really stand out? It isn’t about preservation—it’s about avoiding the discomfort of decision making and letting go. We use digital hoarding as emotional insurance, and that keeps us tethered to pasts and possibilities that no longer serve us. It’s strange how a camera roll can become both archive and confession. Saving the recipe instead of cooking it. Or better yet, saving the workout routine instead of working out (hi, it me.) This is aspirational hoarding disguised as productivity—a way to feel prepared without ever engaging. We tell ourselves we just like having options, but underneath is a fear of making the wrong choice. It starts to feel like we’re saving for a version of ourselves we haven’t become. In reality, we just don’t trust ourselves or our tastes.

Digital hoarding is excessive, automatic and fear-driven. Curation is intentional, reflective—revisited.

The Case for Curation

Since digital spaces have an infinite capacity, there is no physical limit forcing us to choose. That naturally leads to a belief that we aren’t ready or that our ideas aren’t good on our own. We have to learn how to trust our own tastes without backup. That doesn’t mean stripping down to minimalism or over-perfecting an aesthetic. It means being deliberate on what stays and what actually reflects us authentically. Think about what nourishes us now rather than holding onto a vision of who we might become later. Inspiration isn’t a thing you store. It’s a thing you cultivate through thoughtfulness. When we don’t choose, we lose the ability to know what actually matters. When we learn to edit and delete, it becomes a direct act of self-definition.

And sometimes the first act of creation is deleting what was never ours to keep.

I’ve been scrolling through my camera roll trying to figure out what I’ve been drawn to lately. Pink kitchens that look like they belong in a fever dream. Flowers so dark they’re almost threatening. A dress covered in insects preserved in resin. Architecture that cuts through old stone and refuses to blend in.

The through-line isn’t about taste or aesthetics. It’s tension between soft and severe. A refusal to play it safe or choose the expected thing. To let predictability become a personality.

Predictability tricks you into believing you’re in control. In reality, you’re just repeating yourself. And eventually, that repetition starts to feel like a cage you built with your own two hands. Which is embarrassing when you think about it.

So here’s what I’m carrying into the week: the permission to surprise myself. To let my instincts be louder than my overthinking, and stop editing before I’ve even started.

Not everything needs to match to make sense. Sometimes the friction is the clarity. And honestly, if it all fit together perfectly, I’d be suspicious.

I didn’t start SUGAR & ASPHALT because I needed another outlet. I have plenty of those already—half finished projects, voice notes I’ll never listen to again, documents titled “thoughts” that I swear I'll organize eventually. I started this because I was tired of acting like I didn’t have anything to say.

For years, my creativity showed up in fragments. A line here, an idea there, all of it scattered across apps and notebooks like I was planning to piece it together later. Except later never came. I just kept collecting thoughts like they’d organize themselves, meanwhile convinced I was “waiting for the right time.”

The right time for what exactly? Permission? Clarity? Some cosmic sign that I was ready?

At some point I realized: I was the only thing in my way.

So I made the space anyway. SUAGR & ASPHALT—soft but with teeth. Where I stop pretending my thoughts aren’t worth the attention. Where the observations, the contradictions, the 2AM realizations that feel too specific but too honest to ignore, all get a home.

I’m not trying to be profound. I’m trying to be honest. And honestly, I’ve been holding back for no real reason other than my own bullshit! The ideas kept coming regardless. The only question was whether I'd actually do something with them or keep telling myself I would “eventually.”

Eventually is just procrastination with better PR.

SUGAR & ASPHALT exists because I stopped waiting to feel ready. Because I realized the version of me that keeps generating these thoughts deserves more than my notes app. Because ignoring what wants to be said started feeling like betrayal of the part of me that actually knows what it’s doing.

This isn’t a beginning. It’s a return—to the voice I’ve always had, to the creativity that never actually left, to the version of myself that stopped asking for permission to take up space.

So here we are.

The space is built.

The thoughts are ready.

Now we see what happens when I finally stop getting in my own way.
